Area Activities

Centrally located Lille is a veritable railway hub, providing direct links with all the European capitals and cities.  By train, Lille is about one hour 40 minutes from London, 38 minutes from Brussels, and one hour from Paris.  Lille is a city rich in history as over 10 centuries have left their mark.  The Citadel, erected by Vauban, is one of the better examples of the military architecture of the 17th century.  La Vieille Bourse (the old stock exchange building) is a remnant of the Spanish occupation that shows so well the combination of the French and Flemish cultures. The Grand Place is a highlight of Lille and the sculpture of its Goddess is a symbol of the resistance against the Austrians in 1792.  There are several fabulous museums in Lille, including the Beaux-Arts, le Musee d'Histoire Naturelle, and L'Hospice Comtesse, an old Notre Dame Hospital founded in 1237. Another must-see is the Place du Theatre. This neo-classic building with its imposing façade was inaugurated in 1923.  This Italian-style theatre can accommodate more than 1,000 people.  The Citadel Park in Lille is also a highlight, with playgrounds, merry-go-rounds, and a zoo with 400 animals, including some endangered species. The park includes the Boulogne Woods, making it the largest park in the city.
